What is the role of an occupational therapist regarding the activities of daily living?
Occupational Therapy identifies and addresses the difficulties patients experience in their everyday activities, such as eating, cooking, transferring from a wheelchair, personal hygiene, etc.
The Occupational Therapist carefully analyzes the causative factors of the patients’ difficulties, chiefly neuromuscular problems, but also environmental and psychosocial factors. These are recorded using internationally recognized scales. In discussion with the other members of the Trans-Disciplinary Rehabilitation team, a program of intervention is formulated.
The occupational therapist may apply special therapeutic techniques to achieve the patients’ goals.
Where indicated, the occupational therapist may visit the patients’ homes, advising on interventions and educating the patients’ relatives on techniques to facilitate daily activities.
