As we grow older, the risk of falling and being injured also increases.
According to the World Health Organization, falls in people over the age of 65 are the second leading cause of injury leading to death, as, from this age, the number of falls that prove fatal increases.
However, falls not only cause serious injuries, but also have a detrimental psychological impact on the patient.
Most falls are due to slipping or tripping while walking, even on a flat surface (“fall from the same height”). The most common injuries sustained by people who fall from the same height are to the wrist, hip, spine, and head.
The presence of osteoporosis at these ages increases the risk of fractures from falls.
When dementia and/or other serious cognitive disorders coexist, such as organic psychosis, then things become extremely dangerous, especially when the patient remains undiagnosed and therefore is not taking the appropriate medication.
Patient falls inevitably occur in the hospital environment.
The international bibliography and accompanying statistics confirm that, even with the adoption of all necessary protective measures, the risk of falls in patients with the aforementioned pathology in Hospitals and Rehabilitation Centers can be reduced, but it does not disappear, as it is the nature of serious cognitive disorders that makes patients unpredictable and prone to falls, even with medication.
Of definitive importance for reducing the risk of falls is the Quality Policy that is applied internationally in modern Healthcare Structures.
Modern Quality Management Systems include risk assessment in the development of each activity.
At ANAPLASI, our patients are hospitalized in a safe and fully accessible environment, with specifications that contribute to minimizing the chance of falling (accessible, bright, comfortable rooms and treatment areas, robotic beds with position locking function and protective supports, special hospital floors, a multitude of special aids that help patients’ functionality).
The experienced nursing and therapeutic staff of ANAPLASIS apply a series of assessment scales, increasing their vigilance in patients who are at high risk of falling. At the same time, they design and implement an individualized Rehabilitation Program for patients who come for Rehabilitation of physical problems. This program aims not only to improve balance, posture, walking, and self-care skills as quickly as possible but also to stabilize and improve psycho-mental skills and to ensure emotional stability through the use of specialized psychometric tests and ongoing psychological support.
Your role, the role of those close to you, is crucial in this evaluation.
The honest information provided to our doctors by people close to a patient with dementia or organic psychosis, regarding their history of falls and the medication they are receiving, is very important.
Even more important is your immediate response and ongoing collaboration with the Rehabilitation Team, especially in undiagnosed patients and in patients whose medication needs modification.
It is important to set a good example for the patient, primarily by implementing medical instructions yourself:
-Prevent patients from mobilizing themselves and
-Do not attempt to mobilize patients without the approval of our doctors or without the help and supervision of the nursing and therapeutic staff.
Even patients with impaired psycho-mental functions can feel the care of the ANAPLASIS Rehabilitation Team.
