What is the role of the speech therapist (speech-language pathologist, SLP)?
The speech therapist is broadly concerned with the diagnosis and treatment of:
- Speech Disorders – where there is difficulty producing speech sounds correctly or fluently.
- Language disorders – where there is difficulty understanding or using language to communicate, including written language.
- Social communication disorders.
- Cognitive communication disorders, where there is difficulty concentrating or organizing communication, often due to brain injury.
- Dysphagia disorders of swallowing and chewing.
In ANAPLASI, the speech therapist, as a member of the Trans-Disciplinary Rehabilitation team, participates in constructing the patient’s Rehabilitation plan in addition to providing specialist therapy and contributing to therapy sessions simultaneously with other specialists.
