ATHENS, GREECE.

Background

We present a long series of patients who underwent uni- or multilevel cage-assisted cervical microdiscectomy without plate fixation with very good results.

Material and methods

During a 10-years period (1994-2003) 219 patients suffering from cervical degenerative disc disease underwent anterior cervical microdiscectomy and titanium cage-augmented fusion without plate fixation. They were 92 men and 127 women, who ranged from 24 to 79 years of age (mean 54.7 years). In 74 patients (34%) the procedure was at one level, in 101 (46%) at 2 levels, in 39 (18%) at 3 levels and in 5 (2%) at 4 levels. The cervical degenerative disc disease was confirmed by radiography and magnetic resonance imaging after a clinical presentation of radiculopathy and/or myelopathy.
